What this page is for
If you are qualifying a precision-cast automotive component supplier for a Tier 1 or OEM program, the questions that decide the award are rarely about "quality" in general. They are specific: Is the IATF 16949 scope line actually casting, not just machining? Can they produce a PPAP Level 3 package on a comparable part? Do they have in-house CMM and spectrometer data from the last 30 days? Can they trace a finished casting back to the heat lot?
This page is organized around those questions. Every capability below is stated so you can test it against your drawing and your supplier-approval checklist - not so you can take it on faith.
Part families and material scope
| Part family | Typical automotive application |
| Steering knuckles / uprights | Suspension and steering geometry |
| Steering knuckles / uprights | Brake system structural mounting |
| Pump housings / bearing carriers | Powertrain and auxiliary drive |
| Pump housings / bearing carriers | Chassis load paths |
| Turbocharger / compressor housings | Boost and exhaust flow |
Materials: carbon steel (S20C–S45C, ZG230-450 family), low-alloy and heat-resistant steels (e.g. G25CrMo4), and austenitic stainless grades (CF8/304, CF8M/316, and low-carbon variants). Material is certified per heat lot; the mill certificate (EN 10204 3.1 or equivalent) is cross-checked against an in-house spectrometer result before release.
What is actually certified
IATF 16949:2016 is held as a quality management system certification covering foundry operations and downstream CNC machining within the same scope. This is not a product certification - it certifies that the process is structured for preventive defect control, traceability, and measurable improvement across melting, pouring, solidification, heat treatment, and machining.
What a buyer can request and verify before award:
![]() |
IATF certificate number, verified in the IATF global database. The scope line must explicitly include casting, not only machining or assembly. |
![]() |
Customer-specific requirement (CSR) flow-down matrix for the end OEM or Tier 1. Suppliers who cannot produce this matrix have not operated inside a real automotive program. |
![]() |
PPAP Level 3 package from a recent automotive job (redacted as needed): design records, PFMEA, control plan, MSA, capability studies, ISIR, material certs, and PSW - all 18 elements populated, not a template. |
![]() |
CMM reports from the last 30 days, with machine calibration and operator training records available on request. Historical showcase reports are not accepted as process evidence. |
![]() |
Traceability from finished casting to heat lot, alloy certificate, operator, machine, and shift for safety-related or regulated part numbers. |
What matters in a foundry
Casting quality is established before machining. If melting chemistry, pouring temperature, solidification, and heat treatment are not controlled, no downstream CNC operation recovers the part. The production system therefore runs SPC across melting, heat treatment, intermediate stages, and outsourced operations, not only on final dimensions.
Part-specific, not generic
A PFMEA written for a bracket is not the PFMEA for a knuckle. Buyers auditing the process should ask to see the control plan matched to the part family being quoted.
Audit schedule that actually runs
Layered process audits and twice-yearly internal audits per department are maintained, with annual surveillance by the certification body. Ask for the last internal audit plan and management review minutes.
Control where defects originate
Statistical process control is applied at melting, heat treatment and intermediate stages - the points where a casting defect is created - rather than only at final inspection.
- The relevant question for a sourcing engineer is not whether the certificate exists, but whether the audit schedule is actually running - ask for the last internal audit plan and management review minutes.
Dimensional and metallurgical verification
In-house optical emission
Every heat is checked in-house, with standardization logs available. A supplier without in-house spectrometer capability relies on the ingot vendor's certificate alone - which means the first independent chemistry check happens after the castings are already made.
GD&T-literate measurement
CMM platforms (Zeiss / Hexagon / Mitutoyo class) with calibration records and quality staff who read GD&T. Composite positional tolerances and datum schemes on automotive drawings require more than X-Y measurement.
Balloon-numbered, every dimension
ISIR within the PPAP package follows the drawing balloon-numbered, every dimension reported against tolerance. A part pulled from warehouse stock should retrieve its ISIR in minutes, not days. If it cannot, traceability is cosmetic.
Capability agreed at PPAP
Cpk targets for critical characteristics are agreed at PPAP; SPC data from serial production is available for review during supplier audits rather than summarized as a single historical figure.

VDA and DIN awareness
For German and broader European Tier 1 flows, VDA 6.3 process audit literacy and DIN casting standard familiarity are part of the working vocabulary. European buyers increasingly expect tensile testing per specified DIN methods on separately cast test bars, with a minimum number of bars per batch, and dimensional variation held inside machining allowance rather than "within casting tolerance" as a standalone claim.
If the end customer is a European OEM or Tier 1, state this at RFQ. The CSR matrix and inspection documentation package will be aligned accordingly from the quotation stage, not retrofitted at PPAP.
What to send, what you get back
A precision-cast automotive part cannot be quoted from a part family name. Send the following and the quote review will be structured against your drawing, not against a generic price-per-kilo assumption:
|
2D drawing with revision status (PDF). |
STEP or IGES model if available. |
Target alloy and temper, or the accepted equivalent. |
|
Machining scope: datums, bores, threads, sealing faces, and surfaces that must be machined versus left as-cast. |
Annual volume and sample quantity. |
Inspection and documentation requirements: PPAP level, ISIR, CMM reporting, material certification, leak-test or NDT scope if applicable. |
|
Destination country and Incoterm assumption. |
Quote review output: a process route covering casting method, machining scope, inspection plan, tooling assumption, MOQ, and lead time - reviewed as a sourcing project, not a contact-form acknowledgment. PPAP turnaround for a new gravity or low-pressure casting with machining is typically 4–8 weeks; this is stated at quotation so program timing is not built on an unrealistic ramp.

Send a drawing for a structured quote review.
Upload your 2D drawing and STEP model. You will receive a process route, inspection plan and lead time reviewed against your drawing - not an automated reply.
