Product Overview

Our High Manganese Steel Crusher Screen Plate, also referred to as a crusher grate plate, perforated screen deck, or porous crusher screen panel, is an essential wear component installed in crushing and screening equipment used across mining, quarrying, aggregate processing, cement production, and metallurgical industries. Manufactured from high-quality Hadfield austenitic manganese steel (11-14% Mn or 17-20% Mn grades), this screen plate is specifically engineered to withstand severe impact loading, heavy abrasion, and continuous high-stress material flow.

The screen plate serves a dual function in hammer crushers, impact crushers, pulverizers, and vibrating screen decks: it classifies fragmented rock, ore, and construction aggregate to the required size by allowing properly sized particles to pass through its apertures, while simultaneously redirecting oversized material back onto the crushing surface or liner plate for further size reduction. In high-impact crushing circuits, the combination of impact loading and abrasive mineral flow demands a material that is not merely "hard," but tough, ductile, and capable of hardening dynamically in service. This is precisely where austenitic manganese steel outperforms conventional wear-resistant steels.

Why High Manganese Steel?

High manganese steel-also known as Hadfield steel-is the industry gold standard for crusher wear parts due to its remarkable work hardening capability. A fully austenitic, non-magnetic, quench-annealed alloy containing 11%–14% manganese, this steel possesses an exceptional ability to harden under shock or high impact pressure in service.

The Work Hardening Mechanism
When severe abrasion or heavy impact occurs on the surface of a high manganese steel crusher screen plate, the austenitic microstructure undergoes a transformation, resulting in a dramatic increase in surface hardness while the underlying material retains its original toughness and ductility. This unique property is what makes manganese steel screen plates so effective in high-stress crushing environments.

Hardness progression in service:

  • Initial as-cast condition: ≤ 300 HBW (meeting GB/T 5680-2023 standard)
  • Under moderate impact loads: work-hardens to HB 350–400
  • Under high impact loads: surface hardness reaches HB 500–800

This means that the more impact your crusher screen plate receives during operation, the harder and more wear-resistant its surface becomes-an advantage that no ordinary steel plate can match.

Work-Hardening Capability

This is the defining characteristic of high manganese steel. In the as-cast, solution-annealed condition, the material has a relatively low initial hardness (approximately 200 HB). However, once subjected to repeated heavy impact and compressive stress during crushing operations, its surface rapidly undergoes strain hardening, increasing the surface hardness to 500-600 HB or higher (HRC 45-55), effectively forming a self-renewing, super-hard wear-resistant surface.

Impact Toughness and Ductility

The austenitic microstructure of high manganese steel endows it with extraordinary toughness, enabling it to absorb large amounts of impact energy without brittle fracture. Hadfield steel typically exhibits a yield strength of approximately 379 MPa and a tensile strength of around 965 MPa, along with excellent elongation - meaning the screen plate can resist cracking and breaking even under the heavy impact of large rock fragments in primary and secondary crushing applications.

Optimized Material Grades Tailored for Different Working Conditions

Different crushing and screening environments demand different material formulations. We manufacture high manganese steel crusher screen plates in the following standard and customizable grades, each optimized for specific levels of impact and abrasion severity: Mn13, Mn13Cr2, Mn18Cr2, Mn22Cr2, etc. Our technical team works closely with clients to select the optimal grade based on ore hardness, feed size, impact energy, throughput, and expected replacement intervals. We can also incorporate micro-alloying additions of molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), or titanium (Ti) for further customized performance enhancement.

Water Toughening Heat Treatment

High manganese steel must undergo proper heat treatment to achieve the fully austenitic microstructure required for its outstanding work-hardening behavior. Our screen plates undergo a specialized water toughening treatment (also known as solution annealing and water quenching): the castings are heated to approximately 1050-1100°C, held to ensure complete dissolution of carbides into the austenite matrix, and then rapidly quenched in water or a water-salt solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does high manganese steel screen plate require special handling or pre-service preparation?

-

No. The water-toughened screen plate is delivered in its solution-annealed condition (fully austenitic, tough, and ready for installation). Work-hardening develops naturally and automatically during the first hours of crushing operation - no pre-treatment or "break-in" procedure is required on your part.

Can you supply screen plates for any crusher brand?

-

Yes. We produce crusher screen plates and grate bars compatible with most major OEM crusher brands and models. Our OEM replacement parts are manufactured to original dimensional specifications with the same or better material quality. We can also reverse-engineer from your worn sample parts.

What is the typical lead time for custom screen plate orders?

-

Standard lead times range from 20 to 50 days, depending on order size, complexity, and current production schedules.Expedited production options may be available - please contact our sales team for specific timelines.

Is high manganese steel screen plate suitable for all screening applications?

-

High manganese steel excels in high-impact screening environments where heavy, coarse rock is being classified or scalped. However, in applications with minimal or no impact loading (e.g., fine slurry screening or low-stress abrasive flow), alternative materials such as polyurethane panels, woven wire mesh, or chromium carbide overlay plate may offer better cost-effectiveness.Our team is happy to provide a material selection consultation based on your specific operating conditions.

How does your product differ from standard rolled high manganese steel plate?

-

Standard rolled high manganese steel plate (e.g., X120Mn12, Creusabro M) is a general-purpose flat product often used for fabricating liners and chutes. Our crusher screen plate is a purpose-cast component - produced through sand casting with precise aperture geometry, customized to the specific crusher model, and heat-treated as a finished casting. This yields a part that fits accurately, wears evenly, and delivers optimized screening performance from day one.
