The addition of molybdenum (Mo) - approximately 0.15%–0.25% - is the key differentiator that sets 42CrMo apart from 40Cr and other alloy steels. Molybdenum is a strong carbide-forming element that significantly enhances hardenability and effectively suppresses temper brittleness. While 40Cr achieves an oil-quenched critical diameter of 25–40mm, 42CrMo extends this to 40–80mm or greater, ensuring that even large-section shafts achieve uniform hardness and strength throughout the cross-section.
